The Cayman Islands
Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac are a grouping of three islands south of Cuba and east of Mexico and Belize. In 1503 one of Christopher Columbus’ ships was blown off its route. During this “detour” Columbus came across two islands, now known as Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. He named them “Las Tortugas” because of the number of sea turtles he found living around the islands. In 1530 these two islands, plus a third one nearby, began to be called “Caimanas” from a Carib Indian word for crocodiles. This is where the modern name “Cayman” comes from.
