All week Bella tried to convince Carol to trade solos with her. She asked again and again, sounding like a broken record. She loudly criticized Carol’s singing. Carol tried to tune her out, but Bella’s mean comments bothered her.
Bella drummed up lots of support from the other girls in choir. Bella was popular and outgoing, so they took their cues from her. They accused Carol of being selfish.

Finally, Carol give in. After choir practice she told Mr. Davidson she no longer wanted the solo.
Mr. Davidson said, “I know you’re doing this because of Bella. As the director, I get to call the tune. Tell her I won’t let you trade.”
Carol said, “But Bella’s right. It’s a really demanding solo, and although I can carry a tune, I’m not a great singer. I really don’t think I can do it.”
They finally compromised. Carol and Bella would trade solos. But Carol would meet with Mr. Davidson to learn how to jazz up her part in “Sing Me to Heaven.”
